How to keep on top of your energy hygiene

 

I’ve been practicing energy work and teaching Reiki for over 20 years now, and I see keeping on top of my energy hygiene as being as important as brushing my teeth and showering every day. ๐Ÿšฟ ๐Ÿชฅย 

WHAT IS ENERGY HYGIENE?

It’s the regular practices you use to keep your energy, mood, nervous system, physical and mental health and emotional state clear, grounded, and not bogged down by everyone else’s shite.

If I hadn’t kept on top of my energy hygiene, my 18 years spent as a Parole Officer would have been VERY different! ๐Ÿ˜‚

There were many times I had to clear bad juju from myself immediately after prison visits or dealing with people who had a bunch of negative crap latched on to them – if I hadn’t known these practices, I’d have walked around with everyone else’s energy latched onto me all the time and brought that shit energy home with me. ๐Ÿคฎย 

Most people walk around energetically leaking all their bad juju and unresolved trauma like a busted shopping bag, ready for other people to slip on their trail of goop.

At the crux of it, we all absorb things (good and not so good) from the people around us and the environments we’re in; the stress of this builds up, we eventually feel like we’re on a not-that-fun rollercoaster and red flags start waving in your body and mind. ๐Ÿšฉย 

If you never clear it, you end up burnt out, exhausted, reactive, foggy-headed, anxious, cranky-pants, overwhelmed and emotionally constipated, wanting to crawl into your bed and not come out for a week or 10.

Been there?

But when you keep on top of your energy hygiene, life looks a lot different. ๐Ÿค—

Yep, you can still get bogged down, but you’re more self-aware and don’t let it last as long as you continually use whatever processes and tools work for you.

 

This can include things like:

๐Ÿ’ค Rest and recovery

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Grounding

๐Ÿซ Breathwork

๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ Meditation

๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป Energy work like Reiki, sound healing or kinesiology

๐ŸŒ… Time in natureย 

๐Ÿ›€ Salt baths or swims in the ocean

๐Ÿƒ Movement/exercise

๐Ÿšฎ Decluttering – your environment, brain, phone, laptop, wallet – whatever it is helps

โœ‚๏ธ Cutting the energy vampires out of your life

๐Ÿ“ฑ Reducing social media overload and doom-scrolling

๐ŸŒ€ Processing your emotions instead of suppressing them

๐Ÿง Being more selective about who you spend your time with

For some people it’s a deeply spiritual practice; for others, it’s just nervous system regulation and emotional self-awareness.ย 

It doesn’t matter how you view it, the end result is the same: you feel lighter, calmer, clearer, more focused and less reactive even if the shit is hitting the fan around you.ย 

 

SIGNS YOU NEED TO FOCUS ON YOUR ENERGY HYGIENE

๐Ÿซฉ You feel drained – especially after being around certain people

๐Ÿคฏ You struggle to switch off

๐Ÿ˜ต ย You’re constantly overstimulated

๐Ÿฅด You absorb everyone’s moods

๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ You feel emotionally heavy

๐Ÿซ  You and your house feel chaotic

๐Ÿซจ You’re tired but wired

๐Ÿ˜ช You’re people-pleasing your way into burnout

Highly empathic people are especially in need of spiritual hygiene practices and could do with learning tools like Reiki to support them.

 

SIMPLE DAILY ENERGY HYGIENE ROUTINE

MORNING

๐ŸŒž Get sunlight – I like to go for a walk first thing when the sun is coming up before I hit the gym

๐Ÿ’ฆ Hydrate – you’ve spent the last 6-10 hours horizontal in bed, you need to hydrate your body

๐Ÿƒ Move/stretch – your lymphatic system will thank you

โœ๐Ÿป Set your intentions and boundaries for the day

๐Ÿ“ฑ Avoid the temptation to get on your phone immediately

DURING THE DAY

๐Ÿง Check in with your body and mind; how are you feeling and what do you need?

๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ Move/stretch

๐ŸŒด Get outside

๐Ÿซฉ Notice what drainsย you vs lifts you up

EVENING

๐Ÿ๏ธ Shower, bath, sauna, walk at the beach – whatever you can do to intentionally “wash off the day”

๐Ÿ“ Journaling is great for emotionally processing what happened that day

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Keep your lighting low when the sun sets – I use fairy lights, candles and salt lamps

๐Ÿ“ฑ Limit stimulation before bed – yes that means put your frikkin phone down

๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ Meditation/Reiki/breathwork/yin yoga

๐Ÿ“– Reading in bed before lights out

๐Ÿ˜Œ Ensure you have a good, calming hour or two before bed to ensure a good quality sleep

 

You don’t have to believe in energy work to benefit from energy hygiene.ย
