I was listening to a Lewis Howes School of Greatness Podcast today which was a mix of a bunch of different people he has interviewed over the years about the habits of successful people.
One snippet was of an interview with Tony Robbins – one of my faves.
Tony said:
“Your brain wasn’t designed to make you happy. Your brain was designed to make you survive.
Happiness is YOUR job, and it’s a decision.”

So true.
We’ve been around as a human species for 200,000 years, since first evolving into homo sapiens.
But for most of that time, we’ve been fighting to survive.
Our brain is hard-wired to live in a state of survival; to be alert to anything we need to fear, anything we need to fight, and anything we need to run away from.
We’ve only really been able to live in a state of happiness for a tiny snippet of our existence so far.
So we literally have to constantly override our primal instincts to live in our current environment.
Often though, we don’t override it that well.
This leads to sabotage, upper limiting, being run by limiting beliefs, and feeling too scared to go after our dreams.
Happiness is literally an inside job.
We need to re-train our brains, our survival instincts and hundreds of thousands of years of programming, to allow ourselves to truly be happy.
How do we do this?
Firstly, by giving ourselves permission.
Permission to change our inner world, so we can change our outer world.
Then, it’s about exploring personal development.
Looking at the habits that don’t serve you, and replacing them with habits that are working towards being your best self.
By clearing the limiting beliefs that are holding you back.
Healing, by forgiving the past and releasing the emotional baggage that’s been holding you back.
By getting to know your values and needs.
By knowing what your brand of sabotage is, and how to overcome it.
By setting goals and actions, and putting in the work, day by day.
All of which, by the way, I teach in my online coaching course, From Surviving To Thriving 🙂
