Inside out – How our beliefs are formed


This week I went to see the movie, Inside Out 2. 🫶🏻

It was such a fun way to represent to kids and adults how beliefs are formed in the brain and also how you can overcome negative/limiting beliefs.

Riley, the main character, hits puberty overnight and it’s so funny to watch the representation of how the “characters” – joy, sadness, disgust, anger and fear handle this new unknown territory when the shit hits the fan and the new characters show up – envy, embarrassment, and most of all, anxiety, who really starts running the show. 😥 

One of the main plotlines in the show is how limiting beliefs are formed and I loved the way the movie makers represented this in cartoon form. 

You see how Riley’s experiences create and form a strong limiting belief, “I’m not good enough“. 😔 

She repeats this in her mind over and over again, creating more anxiety until anxiety gets so overworked and overwhelmed they completely freeze (after they’ve totally blown up Riley’s mind). 🤯

Our beliefs are formed up to around age 21, but the majority of them are pretty well rooted by age 7.

We all have the core belief “I’m not good enough” but the extent to which you’re successful in life really comes down to how much you can ignore that belief and focus on all the times you’ve shown yourself the opposite.

In coaching sessions with my clients it becomes very obvious to me which beliefs are running the show by the language my client uses. 🤔

I start compiling their “limiting belief script” for us to work on with various tools and techniques I’ve learned over the years to interrupt those beliefs, clear them and to help my clients form new, more helpful beliefs that support them in working towards their goals. 🤗

Limiting beliefs is something we ALL need to work on to be able to live our best life.

I’ve been working on mine for years so they rarely hold me back these days, but if they do pop up I know how to throat punch them and tell them to fuck off. 😂
