How to calm the nervous system after a break up

As part of my Project Self Worth program I run weekly live group coaching calls with my members and they’re able to ask questions for us to go through on the call.

Recently, one of my members asked:

“I have a question after leaving the relationship. I know I’m doing well but I’m pretty sure my nervous system is really struggling and I’m emotionally burnt out. I’ve got nothing in the tank and am really struggling with the energy and motivation. How do I reset my body after such a big emotional time to be energetic and get back my drive for life?!”

This is such a great question.

When you’ve spent so long in a shit relationship where you’re in fight/flight/freeze/fawn mode, your nervous system takes a proper battering.

The focus then becomes on leaving said relationship and setting up your life all over again, and if you have kids and shared property this keeps your nervous system in overdrive while you sort out all the practical matters while also dealing with a myriad of shite emotions.

Nobody really considers what happens when it’s all over and you’ve settled into your new reality.

Your nervous system then has the opportunity to recalibrate and will often go into shut-down mode (dorsal vagal), with symptoms of burnout after being so emotionally overwhelmed.

The first thing to do is give yourself grace.

You’ve been through a long, hard slog; validate your emotions, know that you don’t have to hold it all together all the time, you’re allowed to feel numb, sad, angry, all the things.

Don’t feel like you have to immediately sort your shit out and pull yourself together.

Allow yourself some breathing time, babe.

And when you’re ready, start refocusing.

Routine is really important here, including the simple things – enough sleep, water, good food, gentle exercise and time spent with those who love you.

Speak kindly to yourself.

Build some things into your routine that are good for your nervous system…

🔥 infrared saunas

🥰 massage

🌊 walks in nature, especially the beach if you can, barefoot as much as possible

🌞 get enough sunshine/natural light

📱 limit time on your devices

📖 reading actual books instead of the newsfeed on social media

🤭 laughing with friends over a cuppa

🎧 listen to calming music

🧘🏼‍♀️ gentle exercise like yoga

🧘🏼 meditation

✍🏻 journaling

It’s not rocket science really.

Do more of what you love, and less of what you don’t.

Keep it simple while you heal. ❤️‍🩹
