What are you really feeling?

I often find myself working with clients who have never learned how to appropriately identify their emotions. 🥹

They put their emotions in two buckets – bad (angry and sad) or good (happy).

Our emotions are much more complex than this and it can be helpful here to refer to the wheel of emotions to explore what you’re feeling in a much deeper way.

For example, you may think that you’re feeling angry, but there are many other emotions that sit underneath this anger. 😡

During coaching sessions I use EFT (emotional freedom technique/tapping) or QFT (quantum freedom therapy, like EFT on steroids) to help clients shift through emotions like anger, and every time we work through the anger there are other emotions sitting underneath this – usually sadness, grief or disappointment. 😥

Taking a look at the emotion wheel (borrowed from feelingswheel.com), think about the last time you felt angry.

Then look at the emotions underneath anger:

Hurt (embarrassed, devastated)

Threatened (jealous, insecure)

Hateful (resentful, violated)

Mad (furious, enraged)

Aggressive (provoked, hostile)

Frustrated (irritated, infuriated)

Distant (withdrawn, suspicious)

Critical (sceptical, sarcastic)

By uncovering what’s really going on, then ask yourself “why was I thinking or feeling that way?”

What did you make it mean about you/them/the world?

What limiting beliefs come up for you, and what past baggage does this relate to?

By asking deeper questions when you’re feeling some kind of negative emotions, you become more mindful and increase your emotional intelligence. 🤗

You can also then see what it is you need to work on, whether it’s healing past baggage, working on your limiting beliefs, improving your self-esteem, or something else.

If you’d like to shift through a negative emotion with me in a coaching session, comment/reply with one word, the emotion you’ve identified on the emotion wheel, and I’ll drop you a message.
