Back in 2005 when a friend suggested I learn Reiki 1 so I could do self-healing, I never really gave much thought about choosing a Reiki Teacher. 👩🏼🏫
I just googled a course at a place I wanted to go to. Job done.
But in the 20+ years I’ve been doing energy work on thousands of people, and teaching over 400 students, I’ve found it deserves soooo much more time and attention in choosing a Reiki Teacher (or practitioner for energy treatments than most people give it.
You’re essentially allowing someone into your energy field to manipulate it – with a positive intention, however, just because the practitioner/teacher is working in that field it doesn’t mean they’re on top of their spiritual hygiene or practicing what they teach. 🙃
Not everyone working in energy is actually doing their own work.
I’ve come across plenty of spiritual narcissists over the years, practitioners with poor boundaries and teachers who are definitely not walking their talk. 🤯
If you’re choosing a Reiki teacher or practitioner, here’s what to look out for:
Experience matters
How long have they been practising and teaching? Who have they worked with? How do they handle complexity, trauma, and real-world messiness?
Reviews & word of mouth
Don’t skip this step. Ask around. Read testimonials. ✍🏻
How you feel when you speak to them
This is huge. Do you feel grounded, safe, and seen, or subtly rushed, impressed, or “sold to”? What’s your gut feeling saying? And even if they may be a great practitioner, are they the right fit for you? 🤷🏼♀️
I also recommend speaking to several practitioners/teachers and really tuning into who feels good when you speak to them, because it really does matter.
Their boundaries
A solid practitioner knows not every client or student is a right fit, and they’re okay saying no. ✋🏼
I’ve re-taught a lot of Reiki students who had really negative or confusing experiences with other Teachers.
Thankfully, after a break they felt their calling nudging them again and were open-minded enough to search for a new teacher.
If you’re someone who teaches, please keep on top of your energy hygiene and ensure you’re walking your talk – but also know, you don’t have to take on every client who says they want to work with you if they don’t feel like a right fit for you. 🙅🏼♀️
If you’ve felt the calling lately to try out an energy treatment, space clearing in your home or learning Reiki or advanced healing techniques yourself, you’re welcome to chat to me to see if we’re the right fit. ☎️
