I was listening to a Jay Shetty video the other day and he quoted a study where people were given the option of either sitting in a room with their own thoughts for 15 minutes, or giving themselves an electric shock.
60% of men and 30% of women gave themselves a shock, rather than spend 15 minutes alone with their own head.
Which would you choose?
I know so many people who would really struggle to sit alone and do nothing for that time period.
I used to be like that too.
Avoiding my own thoughts and feelings by creating lots of shit to do (not that I knew that at the time).
I still do that sometimes but not very often anymore.
I actually really love being able to do nothing these days, tuning in to the sounds around me, birds twittering and wind blowing.
Granted, most of my male friends would probably give themselves an electric shock for shits and giggles.
How would you feel if you had to spend 15 minutes alone with your brain?
If that thought makes you anxious, ask yourself why.
Why would it be so challenging?
What is it that makes you feel uncomfortable?
It’s actually really important for self growth and reflection to regularly connect in with our emotional state.
Our emotions are a really good gauge – they tell us what needs to change in our lives.
Sometimes it’s that we need to change.
And that can be the hardest thing to admit, can’t it.
It also creates the most work 🙂
But it’s worth it – I promise.
Give it a nudge… sit with yourself, your thoughts and your feelings.
Ask yourself;
💛 what am I feeling right now?
💛 why am I feeling that?
💛 what do I need right now?
💛 what needs to change in my life?
💛 what’s one small action I can take right now to move forward into a better version of myself?
