How to navigate your shitty thoughts

Around 80% of our thoughts are negative.

Does that number surprise you?

In my twenties I did some volunteering as an Appropriate Adult for vulnerable adults being interviewed by the Police.

(Side note: a lot of my mates will have a giggle at me having the title “Appropriate Adult”) 😆

As part of that training we learned about mental health and anxiety provoking thoughts that can lead to behaviour change during interviews.

As homework we were told to pay closer attention to our thoughts over a 24 hour period.

Before that, I considered myself a positive thinker and optimist.

I was actually really shocked to see how much of my thinking was quite negative.

Try this out for yourself over the next 24 hours and see what comes up for you.

Thinking positively takes work and it’s something to always keep on top of.

The primal part of our brain is hard wired to pay attention to risk, struggle and survival, so the more conscious part of our brain needs to work against this in order to think more positively.

Our thoughts become things, after all, and create our reality.

How you navigate through your shitty thoughts and stories you tell yourself will determine how successful you are in life.

Yep, some days it’s harder than others; when you’re tired, unwell, facing challenges in your life.

But you can always flip the script, because it’s ALWAYS a choice.

Yep, it can be easier to just let yourself think instead of consciously CHOOSING your thoughts.

But by doing that you can easily end up on a downhill spiral and you feel more and more shit, tired and negative. It easily builds momentum unless you stop it in its tracks.

The first step to this is to start paying attention to what you’re actually thinking – about yourself, other people and the world around you.

Acknowledge how shitty your thinking can actually be – and know that this has a huge impact on how you feel and consequently behave.

Then it’s a gradual process of stopping your thoughts in their tracks – think EJECT or DELETE when you think something you know doesn’t serve you.

The next step is to replace the negative thoughts with more positive or compassionate ones.

FLIP THE SCRIPT.

Start focusing on the things you’re doing right, the things in your life you can be grateful for, the good things other people are doing and the beauty that surrounds you.

Then take action and make decisions from THAT space and watch the amazing shifts in your world.

Where your attention goes, energy flows… so focus on the good and you get more good.

If you’re finding it challenging to flip the script, drop me a message about how coaching and energy work can help you.

Catcha on the flip side,
