I’m just coming out the tail end of a gnarly chronic pain flare up that has seen my routine very off for the last few weeks.
We went to Melbourne and travelling usually means a flare up for me due to different beds, different cars, different routine and less exercise.
I was back in my routine for a few days and then it hit me again so the last week has been a write-off.
It’s easy to get down on yourself when life gives you lemons, which it inevitably will – sickness, burnout, emotional overwhelm, moving house etc all lead to a loss of routine.
I learned a long time ago how important my routine is for my body and mind, with the most important parts of it being good sleep and daily exercise, and pain definitely throws a spanner in the works here.
I’ve focused a lot of my attention on trying to nail my routine as much as possible but it doesn’t always pan out, and that has to be ok.
I had to give my body and mind grace when I was feeling so much pain, which leads to feeling completely exhausted and not being able to sleep properly.
So I had to chuck the routine out the window for a bit and just do the best I could with what I had.
Today was day one of getting back into my routine, but doing it slowly.
I didn’t set my alarm, when I woke up I drank lots of water. Went for a walk in the sunshine. Went to the gym to move my body (slowly). Got back into eating properly. I’ll get whatever work I can get done today in between other appointments but the focus is on resetting my nervous system more than getting work done.
I’m feeling pretty average, but better than yesterday.
Tomorrow I’ll get up earlier, and get a better workout in.
Have you been needing to go easier on yourself lately?
Take this as a sign to give yourself some grace.
